摘要
It is well known that our climate system is a complex system with nonlinear interactions among multiple factors and multiple scales. Due to its complexity, predicting climate changes on different scales, or even understanding the observed changes have been a grand challenge for a long time. Climate models, as a powerful tool based on well-documented physical processes, have been widely used to simulate how energy and matter interact and transfer in different parts of the climate system. However, to meet the increasing demands of our human society, continuous improvements of climate models, e.g., with higher resolutions, better parameterization schemes, etc., are still highly required. Here an alternative way for the climate studies will be discussed. In view of the complexity of the climate system, novel approaches from complexity science have been proved to be powerful in solving climatic problems. Particularly after the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics, a complexity science and climate science integrated new interdisciplinary is emerging. In this talk, some novel approaches from this interdisciplinary research field, e.g., climate network, stochastic climate models, etc., will be introduced, and some recent progresses will be presented. Moreover, this talk will also briefly discuss the current challenges of this Interdisciplinary research field, and give an outlook.
